OUSA Looks to Improve Clubs and Societies Centre Building
In a paper released today the Otago University Students' Association indicates its plans to spend in the order of half a million dollars on projects aiming to renovate and improve the OUSA Clubs & Societies Centre on Albany Street.
The paper states that 'These projects have accumulated over some time. The OUSA wants to understand student and wider university community priorities before finalizing a project'.
The project includes small improvements to the aesthetics but has a focus on usability and safety as the association looks to extend the life of the building and encourage continued student engagement with the popular facility.
"Students love our Clubs and Societies Centre and we want to make sure we keep it up to date and relevant for them" said OUSA President Logan Edgar.
In 2010 the University of Otago Quality Advancement Unit conducted a survey into OUSA Services (n=391, margin of error of +/-4.9% at the 95% confidence level). In that survey students rated Recreation Services provided through the Clubs and Societies Centre. The results showed that 83% of students use the services, 81% believe they are important and 82% are satisfied with the services.
"In this project there are some upgrades of space, a project to make bookings easier through an on-line accessible reservations system, and safety and comfort work," said Logan Edgar.
After recent discussions the student executive have also put forward possible additions that are deemed to be important including; Non slip flooring in the sauna area, sound proofing, dance room ventilation and improvements to the lift for tradesperson safety and access.
"Students keep asking if the OUSA is buying Carisbrook. All I can say is that requires a due diligence process and there may be an update during Capping Show next week. In the mean time we need to focus on getting our current assets up to speed," said Logan Edgar.
The OUSA is asking students of Otago and the Dunedin public who also use the facility for feedback on the Centre and the proposed changes, either via a submission or as part of a discussion meeting to be held on the 8th of May 11am - noon at the Centre.
